On the 12th December 1996, the Minister for the Environment the Late Marie Tehan announced and established first integrated park management agency that included urban parks, protected areas and the management of the significant waterways and bays of Victoria.
The establishment of Parks Victoria resulted in the introduction of new concepts ranging from Healthy Parks Healthy People through to “Green Connections” (the fore-runner of Landscape Scale connectivity). The emergence of the Parks Victoria reflected not only significant developments overseas especially in Canada (Ontario Parks and BC Parks) at the time but the concept of systems thinking.
The dimensional changes brought by the formation of Parks Victoria with its inherent struggles and achievements did significantly re-define park management, where concepts such as Healthy Parks Healthy People have become a global concept.
I was very proud to lead the formulation and implementation of the concept and the establishment of Parks Victoria though late 1995 until 2010 on behalf of all Victorians.
