In 2006 a range of very innovative and passionate individuals from around the world came together in Reading (UK) to explore a possible alliance to bring a focus on urban parks and greenspace internationally. I was very proud to be one of those individuals. That group of individuals formed the Parks for Life Alliance and was responsible for innovations as “World Parks Day”.
Following on from this meeting, a broader group was brought together under the patronage of the Irish Government in Dublin (Ireland) during 2012. This was under the leadership of Torgeir Sorensen and Christy Boylan. This meeting established the World Urban Parks Initiative that in 2015 became the World Urban Parks Organisation.
I have been very proud to be a key architect in the design and establishment of the World Urban Parks organisation. And extremely proud to be a founding Director.
Welcome to World Urban Parks – the new international organisation representing the vibrant urban parks, open space and recreation sector. At a time when urban growth will see 70 percent of the world’s population living in urban areas by 2050, sharing knowledge and providing a collective voice for all people and organisations engaged in green cities, open space, recreation, health and related activity is vital. Together we want to build healthy, liveable and sustainable communities. Come join us!
